About the role

Smarkets is seeking an inaugural Head of Security Engineering to build and lead their security programme from the ground up. This role will work within the Infrastructure and Engineering teams to protect distributed, real-time trading systems while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The successful candidate will report to senior leadership and the Board, owning the security posture and risk management frameworks for the company.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and evolve Smarkets' security capabilities as the first dedicated security hire.
  • Own regulatory and industry engagement, specifically regarding CFTC requirements.
  • Define a risk-based security strategy across cloud infrastructure, applications, and trading systems.
  • Lead the investigation, containment, and remediation of security incidents.
  • Integrate security into the SDLC, including SAST, DAST, SCA, and container scanning.
  • Implement controls for AWS, Kubernetes, and IaC to harden identity, secrets, and network access.
  • Develop and maintain security policies, standards, and documentation for regulatory audits.
