Staff Core Platform Engineer

About the role

The Staff Core Platform Engineer will shape and evolve the core platform architecture powering n8n, creating scalable foundations across execution, infrastructure, and frontend systems. This role involves driving architectural coherence across platform teams to support over 80 product engineers and the open-source community. You will lead technical decisions, define stable abstractions, and mentor engineers to ensure long-term system maintainability and performance.

Responsibilities

• Drive architecture across Core Platform teams to ensure execution, infrastructure, data, and frontend systems evolve as a coherent whole.
• Design highly adaptable backend foundations that support different workloads, deployment models, and future scale.
• Partner with the frontend platform workstream on core canvas architecture, real-time communication, and performance.
• Evolve core subsystems including durable workflow execution, state management, orchestration, and task distribution.
• Shape data and persistence architecture, including database scaling, sharding, and migration strategies.
• Lead technical decisions through clear proposals and RFCs while mentoring engineers across the organization.
