About the role
As a Backend Engineer on the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team, you will help build GitLab's intent-to-code loop, creating agentic workflows that transform user intent into actionable work items and verified code. You will own early-stage backend development across APIs, data models, and evaluation systems while collaborating with a distributed team on a high-visibility product initiative.
Responsibilities
- Lead backend features from early product discussions through technical design, implementation, and rollout.
- Build the flows, APIs, and data models behind agent-generated work items and implementation plans.
- Develop evaluation and benchmarking systems to measure workflow quality and success rates.
- Use Ruby on Rails and Python to build reliable production systems.
- Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to shape scope and make practical trade-offs.
- Coordinate multi-person projects and communicate decisions in an asynchronous environment.
- Mentor other engineers and contribute to technical direction across the Plan group.
